Of “Jejemons” and the use of “Po”

Our housemate left a more than a month ago so I put up an ad for a room for rent in the apartment. There were a lot of texts and some e-mails but so far, no luck. Most of them asked for what is already in the ad probably because they are too lazy to read something that is not on Facebook. What part of 5,000 per month don’t you understand, Diane? Whoever you are. I’m glad you didn’t reply anymore. I haven’t met any of the potential housemates and yet, I already don’t like them. Every time I would reply, I feel like I’m asking them to make me cringe even more. They put “po” after every sentence and in between words. WTF? Not only it is condescending, it also devalues the true intention of using “po”. For the sake of those who uses “po” in their regular conversation, in case the correct usage of “po” is already lost in you, the word “po” is directed towards the elderly or your parents to show that you are respectful to them in the old Filipino tradition way. Get it? Go talk to your mother and use “po”. They just might hug you in surprise.

Speaking of irritating text messages…

The people who type like SHIFT key crazy have evolved into something that they are now given a name. Jejemon’s are what they are called. Just go to Jejemon.com (yes, somebody was really that quick to register “jejemon.com”) to get a full grasp of what they are all about. Urban Dictionary explains it too. I just don’t know what to make of of their 3rd entry for the meaning of “Jejemon”:

A pejorative term most middle to high-class Filipino teens use to refer to their poor countrymen who dress up as ‘GaNgZtaHz’ and use txt language. What the upper class fail to see is that these Jejemons do not know any better and that’s caused by their inherent poverty.

The elite and affluent, not to mention spoiled teens find yet another way to degrade their already impoverished brethren. Instead of helping the trampled, the high-class Filipino teens jeer at the destitute who they know can’t afford the luxurious taste they have. Of course, they cover this up by volunteering in charitable works just to show that they are impeccable and far better than the so-called Jejemons.

This just goes to show how divided the Filipino people are. Social classes will never break boundaries because the discriminatory elites will never accept the poor in their society as equals.

I wouldn’t say that “Jejemons” are exclusively made up of the “impoverished brethren”. Check your favorite social networking site. One of your friends has surely abused the exclamation point or used “ha ha ha” way too much. It would be unfair not to count them as a “Jejemon“. If not, then it’s not that far that their kind will be given a name too.

First off, the meaning of Web 2.0. From what I have gathered, Web 2.0 is Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube, Friendster. I’m sure there a whole lot more. These are the social networking sites that most of us are very into. Friendster did not appeal to me because of its name alone. Not too long ago, I was hesitant to create a Facebook page because I was scared of reading way too many things that end up in this: !!!!!!!!!!!!! or this: hahahahahahaha!!!!!!!! Plus those classmates from kindergarten to high school. I didn’t talk to them before, why would I talk to them now? But my relatives and friends are insistent. So I finally gave in. I have more than 100 in my friends list now and most of them are people that I don’t know jack shit about. I plan to delete almost half of the people in my list. And by delete, I mean unfriend (*cringe*). The term “unfriend” by the way, made its way to be the 2009 Oxford Word of the Year.

unfriend – verb – To remove someone as a ‘friend’ on a social networking site such as Facebook.

Way to go Facebook. A sudden thought. Does it mean that we won’t be seeing “unfriend” underlined in red when we type the term in a word processor anytime soon?

So. Back to taking people off my list. The first ones to go are those who end up everything with 40 exclamation points and types LiKe ThIs. For those who want to totally annihilate their Web 2.0 presence, there is Web 2.0 Suicide Machine. This website will kill your cyber social life for you and it’s as easy as clicking the noose button after typing in your last words.

They offer Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and linkedin suicide. This is perfect if you think that you have way too much of yourself on the internet. They have a 2.0 Suicide Tour and you can read all the testimonials of those who have already kicked the bucket. There are currently 98 pages and counting.

YouTube Feather Offers Lightweight Video Viewing

YouTube is offering “Feather” Beta for a much more lighter video loading as much as possible. This is a good thing for those who like watching stuff over at YouTube. I have tried it and so far, the only thing that I’ve noticed is that the site loads without all the fuss around the page. It looks “cleaner” but the video loading itself is kinda the same as the non-Feather version. It could be just my laptop so I will have to try it on another computer to see if the videos does load more quickly. The YouTube “Feather” Beta opt-in page says that:

It achieves this by severely limiting the features available to the viewer and making use of advanced web techniques for reducing the total amount of bytes downloaded by the browser. It is a work in progress and may not work for all videos.

To try it, just click ‘Join the “Feather” Beta’ below YouTube’s opt in page. You can easily switch back to the non-Feather version by clicking ‘Leave the “Feather” Beta’.

As what the opt-in page says, YouTube “Feather” Beta is a work in progress so expect things to be not working as expected and try to leave comments so it can be improved.

Goodbye Mininova You Will Be Missed a Lot

I just found out today that mininova.org, the ultimate BitTorrent source has ceased to upload all copyright infringing content. This is a sad day for a lot of people who don’t have quick and free access to foreign TV shows. No more How I Met Your Mother, Cold Case and Movies! Demonoid has yet to be up and running and it’s the only good alternative that I know. I only go to The Pirate Bay when I am desperate. I might have to get used to using the latter even if I find it hard to find legit (pun intended) torrents there.

Read the mininova admins blog post: Mininova limits its activities to Content Distribution service. The replies just keep on increasing and it’s reaching to almost 5,000. Mostly they are about saying goodbye to mininova and a lot of curses and expletives. Some are posting other BitTorrent website sources. This feels like SuprNova all over again.
