National Geographic just released their Top 10 Discoveries of 2009. The Philippines made it on the list not just once, but twice. Yaay to us. One is an ultra-rare megamouth shark and the other one is an “extinct” bird. Apparently, those 2 scientific finds were eaten to oblivion.
Top 10: Ultra-Rare Shark Found, Eaten — This 1,102-pound (500-kilogram) shark was found by fishers off the city of Donsol. They were told NOT TO EAT IT because it’s the only 41st megamouth shark found but they butchered it for a shark-meat dish called “kinuout” anyway.

Shark: If only I knew, I would've eaten you first!
Top 4: “Extinct” Bird Seen, Eaten — This rare quail that can only be found in Luzon was photographed for the first time. Probably this is the last picture of it because it was sold as food at a poultry market after striking a pose. This poor bird went into somebody’s tummy without knowing that it’s the last of it.

Can you see the sad look in the bird's eye?
Que horror. Say why don’t we just stick to balut, people.

“Que horror. Say why don’t we just stick to balut, people.” Oo, nga. It’s a real shame to lose these wonderful discoveries just because people don’t care.
