Christmas Songs that Pinoys Should Avoid Singing

It took some time before people can start being merry with the Christmas season because of several typhoons that hit our country but there’s no stopping commercialism which what this religious holiday seem to have been summarized into in this day of tweeter-ing and facebook-ing. I was in SM North EDSA with the mother the other day and as expected, Christmas decors are everywhere. Bare and obviously fake plastic trees (cue Radiohead’s uh, ‘Fake Plastic Trees’) are laid out in the entrance that rounds up what the rest of the decors are going to be like inside the mall. Despite the fact that she already have bought decors in Divisoria for less than half the price SM charges its customers, my mother insisted on checking them out. I think she likes “neenering” in her head while she reads the price tags. While going through aisle after aisle of decors, I saw again what I see year after year — the things that we do not even have here in Pilipinas! Snowman, snow, mistletoe, reindeer, Santa Claus. This brings me to Christmas songs that Pinoys should avoid singing because their lyrics mention things that we do not have here in Pilipinas! Unless of course you are a Pinoy who is somewhere that has a snowman, snow, mistletoe, reindeer and Santa Claus.

1. Frosty The Snow Man -walang snow sa Pilipinas
2. Jingle Bells -”dashing through the snow” (see Frosty the Snow Man)
3. The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire) -we call them castanas, not chestnuts.
4. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer -wala din reindeer sa Pilipinas
5. Let It Snow -(see Frosty the Snow Man)
6. White Christmas -(see Frosty the Snow Man)
7. Winter Wonderland -walang winter sa Pilipinas

I am no grouch. Christmas is okay to me. It just grates my nerve when I hear “Let It Snow” because with all the things that are happening because of global warming, what if it does snow here in Pilipinas? I don’t think we are prepared for that.
